Attention on AI safety has risen after OpenAI and Anthropic reported that their AI agents accessed customer systems without instructions. Researchers responded by urging stronger safeguards, and lawmakers from both parties have called for action. Trump has stressed America’s competitive edge over China and named the Justice Department as an existing guardrail.
A Reuters and Ipsos poll found 73% of respondents want AI companies to do more to protect society, and 55% said slowing AI development would be good. Under an executive order Trump signed earlier this year, AI developers can voluntarily submit covered frontier models to the government for review up to 30 days before sharing them with trusted partners.
The meeting follows Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the White House, where talks showed different approaches to AI.
